I’ve decided to create a blog, thanks to Anne-Marie Imafidon of STEMettes, who I met at the BSCWomen Lovelace Colloquium 2014 – she suggested creating a blog in the talk she gave, entitled “How to lean in (when you’re not Sheryl Sandberg)” (more information on the colloquium in my very first blog post!). I’ve always been an avid writer, but have found it difficult to find a way of writing that will keep my attention throughout – wouldn’t be a very good novel writer I don’t think (however I’ve always wanted to have something published)! I feel like I need to introduce myself to you all, so:
I’m Michelle, 22 years old, and currently completing my final year of studying BSc Information & Communication Technology at De Montfort University, Leicester. Previously, I studied a year of BSc Computer Games Programming, and whilst I enjoyed the development of games using Unreal Studio, I couldn’t justify continuing with the course purely for that one module. I was the only female in my class, but although that didn’t really bother me back then, it does kind of make me wonder now why the course doesn’t really appeal to women. After switching to ICT, I was STILL the only female in my class (our whole course was split into two classes, so most were in that class instead), but it didn’t hinder my experience of University, as our whole class got along well together, and I always felt like one of the guys!
Anyway, I’m originally from Walsall, which is a small town relatively close to Birmingham known as part of the Black Country. Not your typical Yam Yam – I’ve been told by my boyfriend that my accent isn’t as thick as the stallholders in Walsall Market! Speaking of, I’ve been in a relationship for the past six years, and I’m still as happy as I was when we first got together – truly wouldn’t change it for the world!
First of all, I absolutely love playing video games – I’m a Sony girl at heart, although I do own an XBox 360 just for the awesomes that are Gears of War and Left 4 Dead. I also own a PS2, PS3, PS4, PSVita, Nintendo 3DS and use my laptop for MMORPG games, which include World of Warcraft, Star Wars: The Old Republic, and Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn. I’ve been playing games since I was very young, starting with the Master System and good ol’ Alex Kidd preloaded onto it!
My other hobbies include baking, art, reading, researching, collecting, and befriending random cats. I have a giant collection of baking equipment, which kind of ties in with collecting too, as I pretty much collect any partwork that comes into stores! Currently I’m collecting Disney Cakes & Sweets, and I absolutely love it. As for art, my enjoyment comes from trying many different types of art, such as papercraft, stencilling, painting, sketching, vectoring, etc. Reading and researching tie in together, as I tend to research a lot of things that pop up in books that I read! Can’t really say much more about this, except I love reading game-related books (such as Assassin’s Creed), crime novels and horror stories.
So that’s me! If any of you’d like to add me on my many platforms, feel free to! They’re all listed below:
